Thursday Morning Update...

Gavin is doing ok. His pain is still a huge issue but we are working hard to stay on top of it. He was switch yesterday from Morphine to Dilaudid and we did see some effect but still it does not seem to be cutting it. He is on a continouse drip and then he has been using his break through dose every two hours. After rounds this morning we gave him a dose of valium, which gave him about a little over an hour of relief. He is still ok but he is just moaning rather than crying.

In rounds this morning we talked about several things. His pain is an issue and we need to look to make sure there is nothing going on with his belly. We just did an ultrasound and they are expecting to see lots of fluid, which could cause issues later as far as a possible infection. I was told we may need to place a drain. Gavin will be getting blood today as well as lots of Albumin as his levels are still low despite is transfusion yesterday. We are going to try to start TPN tonight as long as he remains stable this afternoon. He is still running continous high fevers despite the tyolnol, but we did get permission from surgery this monring to try some tordal, which is kinda like Mortin only IV.

Adam initially went to work this morning but was able to come back to the hospital to help me out. Needless to say I still have not slept, but I was able to get a shower this morning, which does wonders for my spirit.

Gavin is looking really good. If it wasn't for the pain I'd be asking to go back to the floor. His belly looks amazing -- I have to remind myself that he just had organs removed. This video is yesterday -- this is one of his better moments.

****This video does show Gavin's belly -- just so you know.

Wow...his tummy looks great! I guess I forgot that it was all done laproscopically (if that's a word). Poor baby, even though he's quiet in the video, you can tell he's uncomfortable. I sure hope they figure out something to manage his pain soon. And I hope you can get at least a few hours of sleep...that will do wonders!! Take care and we're checking in constantly and Gavin is always in my thoughts and prayers!

his little face makes me want to be stronger in anything that I may face in this day...he is absolutely beautiful.

My eyes are filled with tears because my daughter was sick for 9 days with e coli. and I was just about beside myself and though i only know partially the exhaustion and heartache you are feeling...if anything I was feeling is magnified...then I think it's a great testament to the POWER STRENGTH and GRACE of Jesus that you can even get through a minute of your day.

I am lifting you guys up and praying a unique and special peace and rest over your hearts today!

I cannot even begin to imagine your life at this moment, much less Gavin's. My heart aches for his sweet little body to be healed and pain free and disease free. I know that scripture says that God does not allow anything to come to us that hasn't first passed through His hand but it's so hard sometimes to have peace and trust and not sit and cry or be afraid. I have no idea your specfic pain but I have a 12 week old little boy and there is a possiblity that he has a heart defect, we'll have more test in a few months and as a mother my soul aches to be able to fix him and protect him from any ill thing in this world. But, I do know he is a gift to me from the Lord and I have totally released my little boy from my ownership and give him to the Lord. Know that I will pray for your sweet Gavin. I want him healed. I want you to see him playing and laughing and singing and being a crazy boy...I will pray like the Canaanite woman who would just not take no for an answer. I will pray.. every.single.day.

What a sweet sweet baby. I am amazed that you have the where with all to photograph Sweet Gavin after all your family has been through, and in your exhausted, frazzled state. But those of us who follow your lives and are so very concerned, sure appreciate the fact that you can and do. It is so good, and reassuring, to see Gavin looking so great just one day after super super major surgery!

Advice to your readers: Laproscopy is an amazing thing. Two years ago I had a complete hysterectomy and colon resection laproscopically. Today there is not a scar detectible. While the cosmetics are of no consequence, it certainly speaks to how amazing the technology is, and most importantly how much less traumatic it is to the patient and the speed with which recovery is made possible.

When my GYN told me I needed a hysterectomy, I asked if he could do it laproscopically, and the answer was an emphatic "NO." When I asked if I could use my regular surgeon to remove part of my colon, I was told he could do it, but not laproscopically.

When I found the right team of surgeons, I was told I was a PERFECT candidate for laproscopic procedures and I was exactly what surgeons hope for. The doctor who said it couldn't be done, simply didn't know how to.

Moral to the story: Never ask if he can do the surgery. Ask if ANYONE can do it laproscopically. If the answer is "no," ask someone else...and someone else.

I feel certain that Gavin will continue to make great strides. He is a remarkable young man and an inspiration to all. With each day, the pain should become a little less, thank goodness. And Karen, I pray that you get rest. It will be good for you AND it will be GOOD FOR GAVIN. If he could talk, he'd tell you so.
